Feel the food with your whole being
Food is about all five senses. You will never find our traditional food to be spicy. Instead, it is well complimented by local herbs. Taste of fresh rosemary, basil, parsley, sage, capers, garlic, olive oil and amazing sea salt that our clean sea provides for us is more than enough to show you a whole palette of flavors that we grew up with and live with every day. Grilled fish and chard (swiss chard is a vegetable that is grown in Dalmatia and you can see it growing in the gardens of many houses here), brudet (traditional stew made with several different kinds of fish and potato), black squid ink risotto (yes, it is black), octopus salad or octopus under the bell, pašticada (slowly stewed beef dish that made its way to the list of Croatian gastronomic heritage), various lamb dishes… When we look at the menus of some restaurants in the city now, it looks like all the dishes that were made for special occasions are now available to enjoy whenever we want. We don’t have to wait for weddings, birthdays and other celebrations to enjoy them, and so you should enjoy them, too.
Full range of Mediterranean fresh vegetables can be found served in the Trogir restaurants. Most of the Trogir vegetables are even grown in the local fields. The fish made its way to the kitchen straight from the fishing boats that came back in the dawn. High quality ingredients and turning to local suppliers make a huge difference in the quality of restaurants’ offers.
And to soak it all in, please, please, feel free to eat your fish from the bone with your fingers, drown it in homemade extra virgin olive oil, don’t be shy, it will elevate the whole experience to another level. Pair it up with some Dalmatian wine sort (and we have a quite few of those) and you will be going through a divine affair with ultimate Dalmatian flavors.
Fire up that grill outside your apartment
Don’t miss out on the experience of getting the groceries and preparing them by yourself. Head to the city open green market which is situated on the mainland just of the small bridge from the north city gate. Here you will find the most amazing tomatoes from the local fields, sweet perfect zucchinis and aubergines, famous garlic from Ljubitovica and the most potent cold pressed olive oil from Čiovo island or Marina. Few butcheries are situated here for that stakes you’re thinking of grilling. And if you prefer fish, across from the market there is the fish market as well. Take your pick at the fish you’d like from the local fishermen who deliver and sell their catch there every day. Here is a friendly advice: get to the fish market as early as possible for more choice. And for dessert, head back to the green market. Sweeten up your day with thirst-quenching watermelon or ripe fleshy peaches you will buy here. Also, if your hosts own a garden and you see some luscious ripe tomatoes or the herb garden, ask for some and we guarantee they will give you what you ask for.
Don’t forget the wine. There are a few shops around the city that have amazing selection of Croatian wines and that are specialized to sell you what you want according to your needs. Trust the process, you will be satisfied, and don’t be afraid to explore and try something new because Croatia has amazing wines that you have probably never tried before.
Something sweet, a cocktail or two
There are plenty of places in Trogir to have a few drinks in the evening. Some places even offer live music performed by local small bands. It will do for a night out and enjoying a cocktail or two (but who is counting, right?). Others have cocktail parties with a whole performance behind making them. You choose your ambient.
Want something sweet? Plenty of choices. That luscious chocolate and vanilla ice cream that reminds you of careless summer days when you were 10 and had no worry in the world? Yes, we are that sure that we have some of the best ice creams in the country. Or, we highly recommend, try our famous desert – rafioli. No gathering in Trogir is complete without rafioli, that’s how special it is.
We have to tell you, put on your big boots on and start exploring by using all five senses, because Trogir is absolutely ethereal for all of them.
